How long does it take to ride the California Zephyr?
The trip is usually at minimum 51 hours but please plan for delays because they can and do happen.
My train had several delays due to other freight trains using tracks and on the last day we hit a deer so we were delayed like 10 hours because they had to have new parts installed and the power was off.

Chicago, Illinois to San Francisco, California
You board the train at Chicago known as the “Windy City” be sure to try there deep dish pizza and go to Millennium Park to take a picture at the “Bean”.
You will then travel through 7 states full of stunning views including Chicago, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and California.
You will then take a Coach bus in Emeryville, California that will take you across the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco, California.

You can book your tickets directly through Amtrak’s website, Download the mobile app to book tickets there or you can get them at the train station they do have self serv kiosk to grab your own tickets however you can also get them at the counter inside the station.

The individual ticket prices range from $125-$350 for a coach and roomette can average around $1000 however can be cheaper if you bring a friend they often have buy one get one free ticket sales for roomettes or have huge discounts for having two people in one room. Grabbing an Amtrak Rail Pass is a great option if you are on a budget and want to go to multiple destinations. I got mine on sale for $299 they usually have it on sale in the springtime. Though throughout the year it can range from $399 to $499.
The Pass will allow you to hop on and Off the train for 10 stops for 30 days starting with the use of your first board.
Best Time Of Year To Ride The California Zephyr?
The best time of year to go is in the Fall in October right when the leaves are changing so you can see the fall foliage which is when I went it was so beautiful.
However I have seen pictures and heard that some people go in the winter when the snow starts falling the dusting of the snow on the mountains and across the country is breathtaking but so is the fall foliage.
Can I Upgrade my Amtrak Train Tickets?
Yes you can upgrade you can bid for tickets however this method sadly can not be used for the Rail pass but if you buy a normal ticket yes you can upgrade
